Methodology for the creation of accessible dictionaries and other resources for language learning.

The creation of an accessible dictionary is a multi-disciplinary process that requires a combination of lexicographic, linguistic, and technological knowledge. It is also key to contemplate accessibility and legal considerations during the development process, such as WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines). This implies taking keyboard navigation, the use of screen readers, and other assistive technologies into consideration.

The ReLaTe research group has expert knowledge in lexicography, linguistics, and web accessibility. It also has knowledge in graphic and editorial design, database technology, software development, copyright and licensing, revision and editing, and cultural and linguistic awareness.

EDictViz is an example of the application of this methodology: an online accessible dictionary for people with visual disabilities. This prototype version, which shows information from Merriam Webster's Advanced Learner's English Dictionary, is easily customisable and compatible with screen readers and other assistive technologies.
